Concurrent Sessions
Building Safe and Inclusive Campus and Community Environments for BIPOC Students
Presenter: Dr. Mauriell Amechi
During this session, we will delve into the methods of fostering campus and community environments that are culturally engaging and provide support for the inclusion and safety of Black, Indigenous, and other people of color (BIPOC). This session will entail an overview of the four dimensions that shape campus and community environments, an analysis of real-life case studies, and a collaborative space to reimagine the environments we are working within.
"From Learning to Action - How to apply concepts and foundations of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Work"
Presenter: Raylene Gomez
In the current arena of DEI as a multifaceted subject, there is a heavy focus on trainings and workshops. However, this often leaves a gap between foundational understanding and action. This session will discuss the application of current DEI practices in educational settings and its need for adaptability, as it is centered on creating safe and welcoming spaces for minoritized student populations like students of color, lgbt+/queer students, and differently able-bodied students.
Cultivating a Practice of Equity Mindedness
Presenter: Angell Howard
Institutions continue to create new efforts to increase diversity among their student, staff, and faculty populations. In addition, there has been a surge in the formation of committees to address retention and DEI concerns. However, to effectively create an environment prepared to support these efforts, we need practitioners who will not lead with the premise of diversity but be guided by the practice of equity. This interactive session will give you the tools needed to be an equity-minded practitioner.
“Building Global Asian Studies: The Legacy of a Student-led Movement at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC)”
Presenter: Dr. Anna Guevarra
This presentation will tell the story of a three-decade movement that was led by students and fought collectively with faculty, staff, and community leaders to build an academic program that centers Asian American histories and speaks to their lived experiences. The presentation will highlight movement milestones and the interdisciplinary curriculum that is anchored by social justice and critical frameworks and pedagogies.
Lunch Session
A CRCC Conversation: Roots, Fruit, and Agents of Change
Moderator: Dr. Christa Platt
The work of equity, diversity, and inclusion requires a certain level of sacrifice and intentionality. The Culturally Responsive Campus Community Conference’s origin story is one that outlines a collective effort that includes the bravery of key leaders who committed to moving from conception to implementation, all while honoring the experiences of historically marginalized students at Illinois State University. A part of this conversation will leave the stories of the people at the helm of this conference and their lessons learned for those who continue to commit to EDI work with sacrifice and intentionality at Illinois State.
CRCC is organized by a team of volunteers from within the University.
